A US Couple Exchange Vows In A Beautiful Destination Beach Wedding In Secluded Las Rosadas, Costa Careyes, Mexico

This couples love story started in their home town in the Bay Area, California. But, it took another twenty years from them to actually meet in college in San Francisco. The couple started their relationship slowly, first as colleagues, then friends and then finally a couple. They would exchange subtle flirtations over their office chat, all those butterfly-inducing let’s meet at the water cooler encounters. They spent a few years together in San Francisco before making the decision to move across the US to New York City.

Fast forward to September 2020, they couple had been together for nearly six years and had grown their careers together, started a home and lived through the pandemic. As things began to slowly reopen, the couple decided to travel to Maine to Julia’s grandmother’s beach house. The night before they were set to leave, they were supposed to have dinner with friends, as it was their last night in the city for a while.

While she was getting ready downstairs, Jonah was quietly preparing something outside, Julia shares. When she stepped out into the backyard, she found cocktails waiting and Bossa Nova softly playing. She thought it was just another one of his sweet gestures, which he’s known for! But then, their song began, and suddenly, he was down on one knee. Completely surprised, she watched as he pulled a ring from his pocket. In that moment, it was just the two of them in their home. It felt perfect. Afterward, their friends came over with champagne and flowers, and the next morning, they took off on a romantic getaway to Maine to celebrate their engagement.

A Destination Wedding – Choosing A Venue

With the couple’s love of travel, and frequent visits to Mexico it was the obvious choice to celebrate their love with a destination wedding. They had traveled to various cities and beaches in Mexico throughout their relationship and ultimately decided that they “wanted somewhere where everyone could stay together on-site, we could curate unique and different experiences across multiple days of events, and it would feel like a true vacation for our friends and family,” Julia and Jonah noted.

Drawn to the warmth, natural beauty, food, culture, and warm hospitality of Mexico, they decided on the Costalegre Coast, nestled in the tropical jungle. Careyes is a private community tucked away from it all and offered everything the couple was searching for – a beautiful setting and design, colorful hillside villas, unspoiled beaches and a most importantly, a thoughtful and responsible approach to development and ecological care.

The couple’s decision to marry in Mexico meant a celebration of all things local – choosing local artisans, designers and vendors to make their day authentic and encouraging,

The couple’s celebrations started on a Wednesday and continued through the weekend. The couple made sure that their wedding, even thousands of miles away from home, would feel exactly like them. Their love of nature and being respectful for the places they visit and spend time in meant that they wanted all locally sourced food and drinks, vendors, music, artisans and experiences. To help them tie it all together, they inlisted the help of local planner Gaby from Marweddings, who worked with local vendors to truly make it a unique and personalized wedding for Julia and Jonah.

First, A Welcome Dinner On The Beach

The festivities started with an small dinner on Wednesday, cocktail hour on Thursday for arriving guests, and a colorful rehearsal dinner on Friday. The couple wanted to created a fiesta on the beach for arriving guests, welcoming them to Mexico and setting the tone for the rest of the weekend. It was comfortable, casual and fun! All the guests wore white and the couple in locally designed and made floral outfits to contrast. See all the details from the fun event below and their wedding which followed a few days later, photographed by Lauren Fair Photography.

They wanted their pre-wedding festivities to be colorful, fun and casual – all the while reflecting a true mexican fiesta, so their florals included pink, orange and yellow FLOWER NAMES, which complemented the decor.

Then, An Unforgettable Beach Wedding!

When their wedding day finally arrived, guests had time to relax, celebrate with the couple and enjoy Mexico and the beach. The day was calm, relaxed and everyone felt included and welcomed.

Set right against the beach, the wedding was a little more muted in color and style but carried with it the same attention to local artisans and style. As the sun set, the couple exchanged vows and raised a toast to their family and friends.

We worked meticulously to achieve the same level of detail in the flowers that the couple wanted in their wedding.

They chose bougainvilleas, tulips, mini roses, buttercups, orchids, palms and lilies as their florals – and we used them throughout their ceremony and reception in various colors and arrangements.

Congratulations to Julia and Johan! We wish you a lifetime of travel, love and happy memories!
